What Is French Toast

French Toast as we know it today originated in the country of France. It was used as a way to give a second life to stale bread. This was done by soaking the stale bread in an egg and milk custard and then frying it in a pan with butter. It proved to be a delicious method and has evolved into the French toast we all know and love today.

When I think of French Toast one of the last types of bread that I ever thought to make it with was Sourdough Bread. So much so that when I made this recipe for the first time I bought back up Brioche bread in case it tasted awful. It is safe to say that my faith in this recipe turning out was not that high.

Spoiler alert, it wasn’t awful. In fact it was delicious, beyond delicious. I literally did not want to set my fork down. With every single bite I just kept saying the word “wow”. Yep it really is that good.

Every person I have made this for has been shocked by how good French Toast is when it is made with Sourdough Bread. And I hope that you give this recipe a try so that you too can be amazed at just how delicious this odd pairing of flavors is.

Ingredients For Sourdough French Toast

When it comes to the ingredients for Sourdough French Toast I would like to encourage you to use full fat dairy products. I have found that using full fat dairy products adds to the flavor and decadent taste of the food that they are in.

Sourdough Bread has a tendency to be really light and airy. But for this recipe I like to purchase a thick cut sourdough that is dense and hearty. This allows the bread to maintain its integrity and not fall apart when it soaks up the egg custard mixture. Toasting the sourdough bread or using stale sourdough bread helps to keep the French toast from becoming soggy.

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 Slices Thick Sliced Sourdough Bread
  • 4 Large Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup Whole Milk
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 4 Tablespoon Butter to cook the Sourdough French Toast in

EQUIPMENT

Sourdough French Toast Recipe

I like to lightly toast the sourdough bread to crisp it up a bit before it is dredged in the egg custard.

To do this I will lay the pieces on a baking sheet and place them into the oven at 300 degrees for 2 minutes on each side.

In a mixing bowl mix together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon using a wire whisk. If you like the taste of ground nutmeg then feel free to add a small amount to the egg mixture. When the egg custard is completely mixed together pour the mixture into a pie tray or 8×8 Pyrex.

Using the Pyrex to hold the egg custard will allow you to easily dip the bread into the custard and not make a mess.

Cooking Instructions For Sourdough French Toast

Heat up a electric griddle or stove top frying pan using medium low heat. I personally use a griddle that can hold more than two pieces of Sourdough French Toast at a time.

I place 1 tablespoon of butter into the frying pan and let it melt. This gives a rich flavor to the French toast.

Take two pieces of Sourdough bread and place it into the egg custard and press down for two seconds then flip and let it sit for two seconds on the other side.

Transfer the pieces of Sourdough bread to the frying pan and cook for a few minutes each side. Use a spatula to lift the bottom of the bread and take a look at it.

If it is starting to be a golden brown and the egg custard looks cooked then it is time to flip it. Let both sides cook until they have a golden brown color but not burnt.

Sourdough French Toast Frequently Asked Questions

How To Store Extra French Toast?

French toast is a delicious breakfast meal that everyone loves, but sometimes you may have some extra slices left over. If you want to save them for later, it’s important to know how to store them properly so they don’t go bad or lose their flavor.

Here are a few tips on how to store extra Sourdough French Toast:

  1. Let the French Toast Cool Down. Before storing your extra Sourdough French Toast, make sure it has completely cooled down. This will prevent moisture from building up inside the container and making the bread soggy.
  1. Wrap in Plastic Wrap or Foil. Once your Sourdough French Toast has cooled down, wrap each slice individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This will keep them fresh and prevent freezer burn.
  1. Place in an Airtight Container. After wrapping each slice of French toast individually, place them all in an airtight container like Tupperware or Ziploc bags. Do this before putting them into the freezer.
  1. Freeze the extras. Finally, put your container of wrapped up French toast into the freezer where it can stay good for up to 2 months.
  1. Reheat Only What You Need. When you’re ready to enjoy your leftovers, remove only what you need from the freezer and heat it up on a skillet with butter until crispy and warm again.

These simple steps will help ensure that your leftover Sourdough French Toast stays fresh and delicious for as long as possible!

How Do You Make French Toast Not Soggy?

Sourdough French Toast is a delicious breakfast dish that is enjoyed by people all around the world. However, one of the biggest problems with French toast is that it can become soggy and unappetizing if not prepared correctly. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent your French toast from becoming soggy.

  1. Use the Right Bread. The bread you use for your Sourdough French Toast can make a big difference in preventing sogginess. Avoid using soft or fluffy bread as it tends to absorb too much liquid leaving you with soggy French toast. Instead, opt for thicker slices of bread such as brioche, challah or sourdough which will hold up better when soaked in the egg mixture.
  2. Dry Out Your Bread. If you’re using fresh bread, consider letting it sit out overnight so that it becomes slightly stale or dry before making your French Toast. This will help reduce its ability to soak up excess liquid and result in a firmer texture. Stale sourdough is an option as is toasting the sourdough bread ahead of dipping it into the egg mixture.
  3. Soak Quickly. Don’t leave your bread slices soaking in the egg mixture for too long – this will lead to an overly mushy consistency once cooked. Dip each slice of bread quickly into the egg mixture on both sides until coated thoroughly but not saturated.
  4. Cook Over Medium Heat. Cooking over low heat may take longer but helps ensure even cooking throughout without burning while high heat leads to quick searing on outside while inside remains raw and wet leading to inconsistency in texture and taste.
  5. Serve immediately. Serve your French toast hot off the pan with toppings of choice like berries, syrup, nuts, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.

Why Is Sourdough A Healthier Choice For French Toast?

Sourdough bread is a healthier choice for French toast due to its unique properties that offer several health benefits. Here are some reasons why sourdough is a better option than regular bread for your breakfast treat:

  1. Sourdough has lower glycemic index. Sourdough bread has a lower glycemic index, meaning it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels as fast as regular bread. This makes sourdough ideal for people who are watching their blood sugar or trying to manage diabetes.
  1. Sourdough is easier to digest. The fermentation process that takes place during the making of sourdough breaks down gluten and other proteins in the bread, making it easier to digest than regular bread.
  1. Sourdough contains more nutrients. During the fermentation process, essential nutrients such as vitamins B and C, iron, zinc, magnesium, and antioxidants are released into the bread. This makes sourdough a more nutritious choice compared to ordinary white or whole wheat bread.
  1. Sourdough has prebiotic properties. Sourdough contains both prebiotics and probiotics that help promote gut health by feeding beneficial bacteria in our digestive system.
  1. Sourdough offers long-lasting energy. Due to its complex carbohydrates and low glycemic index, sourdough provides sustained energy over an extended period compared to refined wheat products like white toast or cereal that can cause spikes in blood sugar levels followed by crashes.

In conclusion, swapping out regular sliced bread with sourdough could be an excellent way to level up your French toast game while also reaping all these additional nutritional benefits!

Sourdough French Toast Toppings

Sourdough French toast is a delicious breakfast treat that can be enjoyed in many different ways. One of the best things about sourdough French toast is that it pairs well with a variety of toppings, making it easy to customize to your liking.

One classic topping for sourdough French toast is powdered sugar. This simple but sweet addition adds an extra layer of flavor and texture to the dish. Just sprinkle some powdered sugar over the top of your sourdough French toast before serving for a beautiful finishing touch.

If you’re looking for a more substantial topping, consider adding peanut butter syrup. Simply mix together equal parts peanut butter and maple syrup in a small saucepan over low heat until smooth and creamy. Drizzle this delicious mixture over your sourdough French toast for a decadent and satisfying breakfast.

Fresh berries are another great option when it comes to sourdough French toast toppings. Whether you prefer strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries, these juicy fruits add both sweetness and acidity to balance out the rich flavors of the dish. For an even sweeter experience, try macerating your berries in sugar or honey before spooning them on top.

Finally, if you’re feeling indulgent, whipped cream is always a crowd-pleaser when it comes to topping off your sourdough French toast creation. Use homemade whipped cream or store-bought whipped topping to add an extra layer of richness and creaminess that will take your breakfast from ordinary to extraordinary.
