The History of Snickerdoodle Cookies

The origins of the snickerdoodle cookie are shrouded in mystery, with no clear consensus on where or how they were first created. Some believe that snickerdoodles were brought over to America by Dutch settlers, while others attribute their creation to German bakers.

Despite their uncertain origins, snickerdoodles have been a beloved treat for centuries. In fact, Martha Washington, the wife of America’s first president, was known to have a recipe for “snickerdoodles” in her personal cookbook.

The name “snickerdoodle” is thought to have come from the German word “schneckennudeln,” which means “snail noodles” – a reference to the cookie’s spiral shape. Over time, the name evolved into “snickerdoodle,” and the cookie became a beloved classic in American baking.

Tips for Perfect Snickerdoodle Cookies

While snickerdoodles are a simple cookie to make, there are a few tips and tricks to ensure that they turn out perfectly every time. This snickerdoodle cookies recipe is soft and chewy and incorporating these tips helps to achieve that desired result.

– Use room temperature ingredients: Make sure your butter and eggs are at room temperature before getting started. This will help the ingredients combine more easily and result in a smoother dough.

– Don’t overmix the dough: Overmixing can lead to tough cookies, so be sure to mix the dough just until the ingredients are combined.

– Do not chill the dough: Chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking is often done to help prevent the cookies from spreading too much in the oven. However due to the makeup of these cookies it is an unnecessary step. In fact I prefer these cookies baked right away.

– Roll the dough in cinnamon-sugar: Rolling the dough balls in the cinnamon-sugar mixture ensures that every bite is packed with flavor.

– Monitor the baking time: Keep an eye on the snickerdoodle cookies as they bake, as oven temperatures can vary. You want the edges to be lightly golden and the centers to be set, but not browned. Baking these cookies for 8-10 minutes is the perfect amount of time.
