What Is Puff Pastry
Puff pastry is a light and flaky pastry that is made by repeatedly folding dough with layers of butter or fat in between. It is known for its delicate texture and rich, buttery taste. Puff pastry has been used in various culinary applications for centuries and is a staple in both sweet and savory dishes. During the baking process the pastry rises and puffs up to double its original size. This is where the name puff pastry comes from.
On the sweeter side, puff pastry is often utilized for creating elegant pastries like croissants, pain au chocolat (chocolate-filled pastries), napoleons (layered cream desserts), or danishes filled with fruit preserves or custard.
In terms of flavor, puff pastry offers a delicate sweetness from the butter combined with a subtle hint of saltiness. Its versatility allows it to be used in numerous recipes ranging from appetizers to desserts.
In this recipe it is used as the foundation of letting the chocolate hazelnut flavor of Nutella shine. The beauty of puff pastry is that it has a neutral buttery flaky crust that allows the flavor of the chocolate to be the focus.

Equipment Used To Make This Recipe
We all have items within our kitchens that we enjoy using to make recipes. I have included some of the items that I used to make this recipe along with the links of where to find them yourself on Amazon.
- 1 Baking Sheet
- 1 Pastry Cutter This is used to make a clean cut on the puff pastry. If you do not have one make sure to use a sharp knife.
- 1 Pam Cooking Spray If your preference is to use cooking spray to keep the pastries from sticking to the baking sheet during the cooking process then Pam Cooking Spray is a great option.
- 1 Parchment Paper This is my favorite way to keep items from sticking to the baking sheet during the cooking process. The best part is that it makes the clean up supper easy. All I have to do is throw away the parchment paper once the Nutella Twists are done baking.
- 1 Pastry Brush This is used to apply the egg wash to the outside of the pastry. An egg wash helps the pastry to develop a golden brown color.
Puff Pastry Nutella Twists Ingredients
- 1 Puff Pastry Sheet: I use frozen puff pastry sheets found in the freezer section in the grocery store.
- 1/2 Cup Nutella Hazelnut Spread
- 1/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
Egg Wash
- 1 Egg
- 1 Tablespoon Water
How To Make Nutella Puff Pastry Twists
Preheat an oven to 400 Degrees Fairenheight. If the package directions on the frozen puff pastry sheets suggest a different temperature than follow the package directions.
On a large cookie sheet either spray it with pam cooking spray or cover it with parchment paper. This will keep the Puff Pastry from sticking to the pan.
Take a few tablespoons of flour and spread it out over a countertop or cutting board. Doing this prior to placing the puff pastry onto it will keep the pastry from sticking.
Unroll the premade puff pastry dough until it is laying flat on the floured surface.
Using a pastry cutter cut the pastry dough in half on the short side of the dough. Cut the dough into long 1/2 inch strips that are uniform in size and equal in number.

Take the Nutella and spread it gently on half of the strips of pastry dough.
Take the other half of the strips of dough and lay them on top of the strips that have Nutella. Twist the two strips together and then place them on the cookie sheet.
Repeat the process until all of the strips are twisted together.
Mix the egg and water together in a small bowl creating an egg wash. Use a pastry brush or the back of a spoon to spread the egg wash lightly over the tops of the twisted pastry pieces. This will give the pastries a crispy brown crust once baked.

Place the cookie sheet with the twisted Nutella Puff Pastries into the pre-heated oven. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove the pastries from the oven and allow them to cool for 10 minutes.
Take the powdered sugar and lightly dust the pastries and enjoy!

How To Store These Nutella Puff Pastry Twists
These Nutella Puff Pastry Twists are not only delicious but also incredibly easy to make. But what happens when you have leftovers? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with some tips on how to store these delightful treats.
- Let them cool completely: Before storing the Nutella Puff Pastry Twists, make sure they have cooled down completely. This will prevent condensation from forming inside the storage container, which can make them soggy.
- Store in an airtight container: Transfer the twists into an airtight container or resealable bag. This will help maintain their freshness and prevent any odors from seeping in or out.
- Refrigerate for short-term storage: If you plan on consuming the remaining twists within two to three days, it’s best to store them in the refrigerator. The cold temperature will keep them fresh for longer. However, be aware that refrigeration may slightly alter their texture by making them slightly less crispy.
- Freeze for long-term storage: To extend their shelf life even further, consider freezing the Nutella Puff Pastry Twists. Wrap each twist individually using plastic wrap or parchment paper to prevent sticking together during freezing. Place them in an airtight freezer bag or container and label with the date.
- Thawing frozen twists: When you’re ready to enjoy your frozen twists, remove as many as needed from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
