What are blondies?

Blondies are a delicious dessert that is often referred to as the “blonde” version of brownies. But in my mind they are so much better than that. If you are that person who loves the taste of caramel or brown sugar and prefer it over chocolate than this is the cookie bar for you.

While brownies are made with chocolate, blondies are made without cocoa powder, resulting in a lighter color. They have a rich, buttery flavor and a dense, chewy texture that is incredibly satisfying.

Blondies are typically made with a base of butter, brown sugar, and vanilla, which gives them their signature taste. These bars can be customized with various add-ins, such as chocolate chips, nuts, or even dried fruits, to create different flavor combinations. My favorite combination is the addition of white chocolate chips.

Baking blondies is a straightforward process that doesn’t require any fancy techniques or equipment. With just a few simple steps, you can have a batch of golden, chewy bars ready to enjoy in no time.

Baking equipment needed to make this Blondie Recipe

Baking this blondie recipe doesn’t require any specialized equipment, however there are a few items that will make baking these cookie bars an easier process. Here are some of the items that I used to make this blondie recipe:

1. Mixing bowls: Use a large mixing bowl for combining the dry ingredients and a separate bowl for creaming the butter and sugar.

2 Hand-held electric mixer: A whisk or electric mixer will help you cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

3. Spatula: A spatula is useful for folding in the dry ingredients and add-ins without overmixing the batter.

4. Baking pan: Use a rectangular baking pan, typically 9×13 inch Baking Dish, to bake your blondies.

5. Parchment paper or non-stick spray: Line your baking pan with parchment paper or use non-stick spray to prevent the blondies from sticking to the pan.

Having these basic baking tools on hand will ensure a smoother baking process and easy cleanup.

Ingredients needed to make this blondie recipe

To make a basic blondie recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:

1. Butter: Use unsalted butter for better control over the salt content in your blondies. It is always possible to add more salt to the top of these blondies later on, it is impossible to take the salt out once it is added.

2. Brown sugar: Brown sugar adds moisture, flavor, and a hint of caramel to your blondies.

3. Granulated sugar: Helps to balance out the richness of the brown sugar and still help provide that chewy texture.

4. Pure Vanilla extract: Vanilla extract enhances the overall taste of the blondies.

5. Unbleached All-purpose flour: All-purpose flour provides structure and stability to the bars.

6. Cornstarch: This helps to give these blondie brownies a chewy texture.

7. Salt: Salt balances the sweetness and enhances the flavors in the blondies.

8. Eggs: Eggs act as a binding agent, helping to hold the blondies together.

9. Baking powder: Baking powder helps the blondies rise slightly, giving them a softer texture.

8. Optional add-ins: Chocolate chips, nuts, or any other add-ins you desire to customize your blondies.

Make sure to use high-quality ingredients for the best results. The butter should be softened but not melted, and the eggs should be at room temperature for proper incorporation into the batter.

Step-by-Step instructions on how to make this recipe for blondies

Preparing this blondie recipe

  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees Fairenheight. Use a non-stick cooking spray such as pam to lightly coat the pan. Take a sheet of parchment paper and place it into the baking dish. I find that the cooking spray helps to keep it in place. Be sure to leave enough of an overhang of the parchment paper to be able to use it to remove the blondies from the baking dish once they are cooled.
  • In a medium bowl melt the butter and set it aside until it is at room temperature.Once the butter is at room temperature add the brown sugar and granulated sugar to the bowl.Using an electric hand held mixer blend the ingredients until they are completely blended together.Beat together the egg and egg yolk in a separate bowl and add them to the bowl.Add the vanilla extract to the bowl and mix the ingredients completely.
  • In a separate medium sized mixing bowl add the flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking powder. Using a fork or a whisk mix the ingredients together for a minute until the are well combined.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Do not use a mixer to blend the ingredients at this point. Doing so will whip to much air into the mix and make them more cake like.I prefer to use a sturdy spatula or a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients together until they are combined.
  • Once the ingredients for the blondies are combined add to them your preferred mix ins of white chocolate chips, nuts, or another preferred mix in.

Baking these blondie brownies

  • Place the Blondies into the preheated oven and cook for 25-27 minutes or until the edges become slightly brown and the top is golden. The secret to these blondie brownies is in slightly undercooking them.
  • Remove the blondies from the oven when they are done cooking and allow them to sit in the baking dish for 30 minutes to allow them to cool and set up. Once they have cooled use the parchment paper to help remove them from the baking dish and cut them with a sharp knife. Enjoy!

Tips for making perfect blondies

To achieve the perfect outcome of this blondie recipe every time, here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Cream the butter and sugar properly: Creaming the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy is crucial for creating the desired texture in your blondies. Take your time to ensure the butter and sugar are well combined.

2. Don’t overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter can result in tough and dense blondies. Mix the ingredients until just combined to avoid overdeveloping the gluten in the flour.

3. Use room temperature eggs: Cold eggs can cause the butter to solidify, resulting in an uneven batter. Allow the eggs to come to room temperature before adding them to the mixture.

4. Fold in the dry ingredients gently: When adding the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, use a spatula to fold them in gently. Overmixing can lead to tough blondies, and nobody wants that.

5. Customize with add-ins: Experiment with different add-ins like chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruits to add extra flavor and texture to your blondies.

6. Pay attention to baking time: Blondies should be slightly underbaked to achieve that perfect chewy texture. Keep an eye on them during baking and remove them from the oven once the edges are set but the center is still slightly soft.

7. Let them cool before cutting: Allow the blondies to cool completely in the baking pan before cutting them. This will prevent them from falling apart and ensure clean, neat slices.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to baking perfect blondies every time.

1. Chocolate content: Brownies contain cocoa powder or melted chocolate, giving them a rich chocolate flavor, while blondies are made without chocolate.

2. Color: Brownies have a dark brown color due to the cocoa or chocolate, while blondies have a lighter, golden color.

3. Texture: Brownies have a fudgy or cake-like texture, while blondies have a denser, chewier texture.

4. Flavor: Brownies have a rich, intense chocolate flavor, while blondies have a buttery, caramel-like flavor with hints of vanilla.

5. Add-ins: While both blondies and brownies can be customized with various add-ins, blondies are more versatile in terms of flavor combinations due to their neutral base.

Whether you prefer the intense chocolatey goodness of brownies or the buttery chewiness of blondies, both desserts have their own unique appeal.

Serving and storing blondies

Blondies are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when they are still warm and gooey. However, if you have leftovers or want to make them in advance, here are some tips for serving and storing your blondies:

1. Serving: Once the blondies have cooled completely, cut them into squares using a sharp knife. Serve them as is or with a scoop of ice cream for an extra decadent treat.
